Spend the Day on the Ranch

Our ranch visits are fun! We offer a day of adventure called "Farm Stay". This is without the traditional overnight stay - unless you have an RV or choose to stay at nearby B&Bs or hotels that we network with.

Our latest group of Farm Stay visitors were a group of four young friends from Los Angeles and San Francisco, who plan adventures together on occasion. Our photos tell the story:

We start the day with feeding mulberry and grape leaves to the females and everything is a photo op!

Next, we head to the Fiber barn to see how alpaca fleeces transform into soft warm wearable fashions.

The Fiber barn is where we skirt, sort, wash, card, dye, knit, felt alpaca fiber!

A hike around the property with haltered and trained alpacas is just the ticket to walk off a picnic lunch in the visitors garden.

We take a break in the visitor's garden and have fun removing bits of hay in washed fiber to take home...

But, there's no rest for the weary and an alpaca farmer must tend the pens on a daily basis
...all play and no work makes for a dull field trip!

A visit to the gift shop to take home fun things alpaca!

Day two - the group was called at nearby hotel to let them know that Destiny, due to deliver, had a baby girl cria that morning. So, before heading home, they returned to meet Naoko, named after the group's trip organizer....and what a perfect ending to an exciting weekend adventure!

Last Cria Born at Ranch

The latest cria born at Alpacas at Crossroads Ranch brought our herd size to 85 huacaya alpacas. This little guy was born the day before Halloween on October 30th, 2010. He was small at 12 lbs, but has reached 14.6 lbs as of today, November 10. He's full of spunk and keeps up with the bigger babies born before him.

We're waiting for him to be named by my friend, who's the namesake of the dam, Barbara Marie.  We'll post after it's decided.

Update:  Here's two more peeks at our smallest alpaca. He keeps up with his bigger friend, Tatiana, born a week before him...

Do you wonder what mom is saying to him?
